Perks at Automattic: Sabbatical

As I’m sitting here writing this post, I’m enjoying the last week of my sabbatical.

Sabbatical?

Depending on where you are, you may be wondering what that is? It’s a 3-month fully paid time off, kindly offered by Automattic once every five years. We’re not just allowed to fully disconnect from work, we’re strongly encouraged to do so. For many of us, this is precious time to enjoy traveling, family and friends, hobbies, learning new skills, and completely disconnect from the work environment.

Good use of the time

For me, these 3 months provided a great chance to enjoy more time with my little twins and travel a little bit, and make some great photos. The cover photo for this post is from the picturesque Horseshoe at Star Chitak near Kardjali, which I got to visit recently:

I also got to play some guitar and piano and read more than usual. I used the time to build some healthy habits, as well, by making exercise a vital part of my routine. Last, but not least, I managed to relax and spend very little time in front of the screen, while spending a bunch of time outdoors. I’m coming back to work with new powers and an even stronger desire to build great things (if I still remember how to write code 😅)!

Gratitude

I have a lot to be thankful for! This sabbatical has been a great way to celebrate 5 years at Automattic. I’m excited to be looking forward to the next five!
